Macbook friert ein (Tastatur, Maus, Audio funktioniert nicht) mit externer Festplatte

Ich habe einige Apps auf einer externen Festplatte installiert, da ich nicht genügend Speicherplatz auf der Festplatte meines Macbooks habe. Leider verhält sich das MacBook einige Male am Tag wirklich seltsam.
Im Grunde friert es komplett ein (obwohl das YouTube-Video immer noch abgespielt wird, wenn es passiert) und ich kann nichts tun - Maus, Tastatur, Touchpad funktionieren nicht und ich kann es nur durch längeres Drücken des Netzschalters ausschalten.
Ich denke, es passiert nur, wenn etwas von diesem externen Laufwerk ausgeführt wird.
